PLANT GENETIC RESOURCES CENTRE

The Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) is part of the Biodiversity and Biotechnology Program under the National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). It is an entity comprising the historical Entebbe Botanic Gardens (EBG) and the Uganda National Gene bank (UNGB), located at 34km north of Kampala and 5km from Entebbe International airport.

MISSION:

To ensure the conservation, management and sustainable use of Uganda’s Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA) while optimizing their full potential in contributing to national development goals.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

To collect and maintain stocks of diverse plant germplasm.

To promote community based and on-farm conservation of PGR as a basis for sustainable natural resource management.

Enhance utilization of germplasm through characterization evaluation and genetic enhancement.

To contribute to development and promotion of acceptable germplasm exchange mechanisms.

To develop information and documentation systems and strengthen linkages among stakeholders.

To enhance the role of the Botanic Gardens in National development.

Our Core Roles

Entebbe Botanic Gardens

Welcome to the historical Entebbe Botanic Gardens, located at Entebbe, Uganda, East African. Region. Entebbe Botanic Gardens (EBG) was established in 1898 as Uganda’s first agricultural research unit. The Gardens occupy an area of 40.7 hectares spanning a long shore line of approximately 1.5 km of Lake Victoria. The Gardens were established for the purpose of receiving and assembling economically important agricultural commodities like cotton, rubber, cocoa, tea, coffee

Uganda National Gene bank

Uganda has a rich diversity of crops and a good landrace collection is maintained at the Uganda National Genebank (UNGB). The National Genebank was established in 2004. The genebank maintains an ex situ collection of over 5,200 accessions of orthodox seeds in long and short term conservation. This collection covers various crop groups, primarily cereals, legumes, oil crops, forages, vegetables and fiber crops as well as a range of crop wild relatives.

Community Seedbanks

The Centre is engaged in sensitization of farmers and students on the management of plant genetic resources on farm. The Centre took on the challenge to educate and brief the participants on PGRC activities and their expected role in community conservation of biodiversity. PGRC has established a network of 6 Community Seed Banks across different agro ecological zones of the country to empower farmers conserve, manage and ultilise their genetic diversity in their farming systems
